Basic Wind, Speed and Depth for cruising

This is a lot to think about. A fish finder/plotter and GPS combo sounds like a cheap reliable way to go. Fish finder/Chart plotter combo with or without transducer? A transducer would be handy if we have to shelter in a small bay or cove, yes? Thanks for all the help! -Shaun

Basic Wind, Speed and Depth for cruising

Hello, We have been invited to go on a cruise (with boats coming from all over the west coast) from Seattle to Anacortes WA in the San Juan Islands in a couple weeks. It will take two days going up, three days there and two days coming back. We have never over-nighted outside of a marina...

    Question about life rings

I was pricing them online today and noticed the same thing. The ring's are a lot cheaper. Ideally, I would get a new cover for the horseshoe buoy, but I'm not sure if they make them. Will probably get a ring and keep my existing horseshoe buoy for backup.

    Question about life rings

Thanks for the reply. The cover on the horseshoe buoy is split along the top seam and the white styrofoam underneath is sticking out. It does need either a new cover or a new buoy. Yeah, I thought it was sort of petty. Everything else checked out though. I was moving the boat to a new...

    Question about life rings

Does the Coast Guard require a Horseshoe buoy, or will a ring buoy work? I was recently boarded by the CG and the cover on my horseshoe buoy is worn through in spots. They were cool about it, but gave me a warning, saying I either needed a new one or replace the cover on it. They said as is...

    Off/1/Both/2 switch and shore power

Thanks for the reply, You are correct, I do not understand how the system works. All I know is what little I have gleaned from the manual. I will have time later in the week to have a closer look. Will get back then. Thanks for the info!

    Off/1/Both/2 switch and shore power

Hey Thanks Bill, I'm at the South Park Marina on the Duwamish river. I will keep your email handy. Our boat originally had a diesel engine, but it was removed and a 15 HP outboard mounted on the back, so the inboard is not an issue. The battery is sealed, can't check the level.

    Off/1/Both/2 switch and shore power

Hi, I am partners in a 1974 Ericson 27, my wife and I own 2/3 and out partner, my wife's best friend, owns 1/3. Our partner stayed on the boat in the marina for four days. On the fourth day, the power stopped working. Nothing works now. Come to find out that she had the "Off/1/Both/2"...

    Cleaning a sail

Hello, We bought an Ericson 27' a few days ago and the main sail has some mildew stains from sitting in the weather for an extended period of time. Here is what I am thinking about doing. I have a recipe for homemade oxyclean, using hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and distilled water. I am...

What is the height of an Ericson 27?

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I talked to the Harbormaster at the marina and he gave me the phone number of the bridge keeper for the bridge I am concerned about. He said if we are unsure, to call the bridge keeper via cell from the boat, and they will tell us if they need to open it...

New Ericson 27 owner in Seattle

We had the slip transfered at South Park, but we are at the mercy of the tides and the bridges there. I think that our mast is short enough that we will be able to get under the 1st av so bridge without them having to open it, but the tide has to be 3' or above to go down river to the sound...

What is the height of an Ericson 27?

Hello, How do I determine the height of my Ericson 27' from waterline to the top of the mast? I have it moored on a river with wild tidal swings and we have to go under a couple bridges to get it out to the Puget Sound. The lowest bridge has 53' of clearance at high tide, otherwise I have to...

New Ericson 27 owner in Seattle

Hello, just an intro. My wife and I took sailing lessons on little Flying Junior racing boats last summer for fun and really loved everyting about it. We have been looking to buy a boat ever since, and finally got a 1974 Ericson 27' for $5,200. The inboard diesel was removed and an outboard...
