The Awkwardness of Prop Walk, Illustrated [and Propeller Choices]

Christian, i actually commented earlier in this thread regarding setting the pitch going from foward to reverse (and vice versa). It does take a few seconds for the pitch to set with the Autoprop, but I usually "goose" the rpms (approx 2500) momemtarily until it bites then back down the...

The Awkwardness of Prop Walk, Illustrated [and Propeller Choices]

One caveat I should have mentioned. When shifting from forward to reverse (and vise versa) it takes a few seconds for the blades to flip around and for the pitch to set. Once rpms come up the prop is self pitchng based up the rpm, so I just goose it for a moment then boat starts responding...

The Awkwardness of Prop Walk, Illustrated [and Propeller Choices]

The fairway in the marina is not as narrow as you describe and our usual wind is 10 - 20, I usually head bow into he slip with a cross wind favoring the Port Bow, so it can be a challange. However, I use an AutoProp and really like it because there is "0" prop walk. They are a 3 blade...

    Radar??? Yes/Maybe/No?? Advice?

I'll second ConchyDug's comments and add to the hazards in the Western Gulf of Mexico. There are many unlit platforms that are hard to see on a clear night. Radar is a big help. The Coast Guard maintains a list of unlit obstructions which can be entered into your GPS for reference. I'd...

    Sailpack or mainsail cover

I also have a Doyle Stack Pack, it was added by the pervious owner. Its a great system, also has a Tides Sail Track which makes raising and lowerig the mail much easier. The system is great for short handed sailing. Drop the sail and it falls into the cover, zip it up and your done...

Gulf Coast Ericson Owners Role Call

Welcome Rod and Kim. I also own an Ericson 381 which is in the Corpus Christi Marina, we bought the boat in St. Pete and had it delivered to Texas. I'd love to get it back to the west coast of FL to cruise the area. The boat was renamed to Waypoint from Totem.

e381 PHRF rating related question re Mars Stability Bulb keel modification.

Thanks for the input guys! Dave I've not seen the Galveston PHRF site so thank you for the link. Given we sail 150 miles south of Galveston their rating should have some significance. I like the e381's listed at 154 and 160 for thier boats! Loren, our boat is a standard shoal draft...

e381 PHRF rating related question re Mars Stability Bulb keel modification.

All great comments thanks guys. Christian, as far as I know the Mars bulb is intended to increase stability so she should be "less tender". However the boat is 660 lbs heavier and as such would sit lower on her lines so would 'nt that negitively impact boat speed? As fas as the...

    Chain plate u bolt

i have proactively replaced all 8 of my U-Bolts on my 381 with Garhauer. They are great to work with and much less expensive than the Navtech versions. Mine fit fine and I used 4200 as the bedding compound. I have'nt bothered to clean up and inspect the originals but they looked good upon...

    Helm pods

In reponse to Loren's request here are a few more details on the Nav station mods made by the previous owner. There is a decoritive cover to the SS post to the right of the table. I'm not really sure of its purpose except that it can open and the PO mentioned it could be hiding place for...
