    Canned Bacon Site Located

At $9 for 3 pounds of bacon, those prices are actually better than what I pay at the grocery store for fresh bacon! Actually, with the equivalent of 3 pounds of bacon in every can, the concern that comes to mind is, how am I going to eat all that?? I usually take a couple mornings to get...

Best way to cut a stainless bolt

Thanks for the tips. Where do you get carbide drill bits?

Best way to cut a stainless bolt

I'd think drilling the head off a stainless bolt would be very tedious, and get expensive as you burned up bits. Any attempts I've made at working stainless with metal edge tools have ended in frustration. I think a metal cutting wheel on a dremel or grinder is the way to go.

    Ericson 27 - broken keel

I probably wouldn't just put thickened epoxy in that, because I think it'll come off again. I'd grind down the surrounding area a bit, fill the void with thickened epoxy, and then lay a course or two of glass fabric over the repair to hold it in place. (oh, and remove those mickey-mouse screws...

It's that time of year again

True of Southern NE, perhaps, but north of Portland, it's not hard to find a place to moor your boat. It seems that more people tend to own their own moorings up here though, compared to further south. For $1500 you've got a mooring setup that will last decades, with new top chain added after...

    Dry Ice

Yeah it's heavier than air, but that just means it could fill the boat and displace oxygen. A pound of CO2 equals 8.2 cu.ft., so the gas certainly won't be contained in the icebox as it sublimes. I would guess that when insulated and wrapped in the icebox it just doesn't sublime fast enough to...

    Sailing on NPR

Excellent! Thanks for the head's up. I hadn't heard any promos for this so I'm glad you posted about it. BTW, do you know Charlie Mayer? Good friend of mine. (He got Carl Kasell to record our voicemail message as a wedding present 10 years ago! :D)

    WANTED: E29 Hatch

Great work everyone!!! I love the curved teak companionways, and especially like the holly accents in the last one. The machined aluminum hatch is very impressive, and probably (quite literally) bulletproof! :p In jkenan's design, is Baltic Birch plywood assembled with waterproof glue? I'd...

Would you trust a rudder stock weld?

$900 from Foss Foam, (and $100 or so to ship it), so call it an even grand. I'll have to take it to a stainless shop around here to get an opinion on straightening and sleeving. And figure out what it would cost to do that, and what it would cost to just have them fab a new stock.

Would you trust a rudder stock weld?

Yeah, I've got my call in to foss for an estimate, so I know what my bottom line is. If rebuilding this stuff will cost $400 and 2 days of my time, I'd probably jump at an $800 job from Foss. I have no idea what their price will be though. Hope to hear back soon.

Would you trust a rudder stock weld?

How do you sleave it 20" down from the top? Is the narrower pipe inserted from the top, and only secured at the top with a weld? Or drilled and pinned at a couple places? I like that idea because I frankly don't think this design has enough strength for my liking. I'm just not sure of...

personal locator beacons and other safety gear

I've heard of sailors going north from here carrying survival suits, FWIW. Are you considering the PLBs and the handheld locator to be used by the boat crew? My first priority (which you may already have covered), would be harness/PFDs that are really comfortable and wearable and fitted with...

Would you trust a rudder stock weld?

My understanding is that the stock extends about 3/4 of the way to the bottom of the blade, and some horizontal flat-stock is welded to the stock at a few points to support the blade. Those welds can be passivated and electro polished when it's initially manufactured, and I don't think you...

Would you trust a rudder stock weld?

Interesting Rob. I had figured that the tube would be weakened by bending it twice. And basically it already proved weak, as it bent originally at that point without any impact. The tiller broke during a blow, allowing the rudder to turn atwartships, and presumably the boat riding at the...
